Samsung’s upcoming Android flagships have been the hot topic with the rumor mill lately, but today we’re switching things up with some new details on the upcoming LG G5.
Evan Blass, writing for VentureBeat, has spilled some new info on the LG G5. According to Blass’s source, the G5 will a LG’s “most premium handset to date.” The phone will reportedly have an all-metal body and will borrow features from other recent LG phones, like a rear fingerprint reader similar the one found on the Nexus 5X and a secondary 160x1040 ticker display like the V10.
The LG G5 is also allegedly borrowing from the cameras on the V10. The G5 is said to feature three camera lenses, but rather than having two on the front like the V10, the G5 will have two lenses on its rear. The main shooter will be a 16-megapixel sensor, and the second lens will give it a 135-degree wide-angle functionality. In-between those two lenses will be a set of four sensors that includes two flashes, a laser autofocus sensor, and an RGB sensor for added focus and scene recognition. Meanwhile, the front camera will feature an 8-megapixel sensor.
LG will reportedly be using Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 820 processor in the G5, and it’s said to be paired with 3GB of RAM. There will also be a 2800mAh battery — down from the G4’s 3000mAh juice pack — as well as 32GB of storage. The source of today’s leak made no mention of a microSD slot, but LG has been making a big deal of the microSD slots on its recent devices because those slots are increasingly rare, so there may still be support for microSD cards on the G5. The LG G5’s display will reportedly measure 5.3 inches — down from 5.5 on the G4 — and have a resolution of 2560x1440.
Interestingly, the LG G5 will reportedly have a feature called “Magic Slot.” Details on the Magic Slot are light, but the source suggested that it could support hardware expansion modules like special cameras, an audio amplifier, or a physical keyboard.
In recent years, LG has released its G flagship phones in May and April. The Marshmallow-powered G5 has been tipped for a debut sometime in Q1 2016.
Much of these leaked LG G5 specs sound like your typical Android flagship upgrade, though some folks might be a bit bummed if the G5 has 3GB of RAM instead of 4GB. Perhaps the most interesting part is this Magic Slot that’ll allow you to add different hardware modules. LG sounds like it’s taking a page out of the playbook of modular smartphones like Project Ara, which let you add modules to a base phone to fit your needs. While the G5 likely won’t be as customizable as a Project Ara device, an expansion slot for hardware modules could help you to make the G5 better fit your lifestyle and needs. If you’re a camera enthusiast, you can add a camera module. If you’re an audio buff, use the amplifier.
