There are a lot of phones out there that offer ample internal storage up to 128GB, and even a few others that have a microSD slot for adding more storage. Unfortunately, there are some devices at the other end of the spectrum as well, offering a measly 16GB of space. Google understands this and is working to make life easier for owners of those devices with a new Google Photos update.
With the new Google Photos, Google is including a “Free up space” setting that’ll remove photos and videos from your device that are already backed up in the cloud. If you’d prefer to let Google Photos handle things, you can let notify you when your storage gets low and then easily remove backed up photos that are more than 30 days old. Because Google Photos backs up all of your photos and videos, all of your stuff will be viewable in the app and the web.
This updated version of Google Photos is now rolling out on Android (it’s version 1.9), and it’ll hit iOS “soon.”
With Google Photos, you can get unlimited free storage of “high-quality” photos and videos, which can store photos up to 16 megapixels or video up to 1080p. That’s always made it a good option for Android and iOS users with devices that have small amounts of storage, but this new Google Photos update makes the service even better for those people because it can do all the work of clearing out the photos and videos on their device rather than making them do it manually. So if you’ve not yet checked out Google Photos, now seems like a good time to try.
