If you’re a Verizon customer that’s still clinging to an unlimited data plan, it’ll soon cost you more to keep that grandfathered offering.
Verizon has confirmed that starting in November, the cost of the unlimited data plan will go up by $20 each month, which means that it’ll cost $49.99 per month. This price change will go into effect in November if you’re out of contract, while those in a contract will have a bit longer before the price increase takes effect. Verizon also notes that government and corporate accounts won’t be subject to the higher unlimited data plan price.
One good thing to come out of this price hike is that folks with unlimited data will be able to sign up for monthly installment plans on new devices. Previously, customers with an unlimited data plan could only keep that plan if they paid full price for a phone.
Verizon stopped offering unlimited data plans years ago, and since then it’s been focusing on tiered plans and making it harder for unlimited data customers to keep that plan by forcing them to pay full price for phones. Right now, Verizon says that less than one percent of its customer base has an unlimited plan, and this $20 price increase makes it more expensive to keep an unlimited data plan on Verizon. Of course, the upside is that at least now, customers won’t have to shell out hundreds of dollars at once to get a new phone.
So if you’re a Verizon customer with an unlimited data plan, it’s time to ask yourself: Is unlimited Verizon data worth $50 per month?
