Well, this is interesting. When Google launched its Project Fi service, it said that the only device that worked with Fi was the Nexus 6. Google’s stance hasn’t changed, but it appears that the new Moto X Pure Edition works (at least partially) on Fi as well.

The folks at Droid-Life had an unactivated Project Fi SIM card laying around, so they put it in a Moto X Pure Edition to see what would happen. After first thinking that it was on T-Mobile for a second, the Moto X apparently recognized the Project Fi SIM and activated with the service smoothly, even giving the SIM a phone number.

There do appear to be a couple of snags that prevent the Moto X Pure Edition from working on Project Fi exactly like a Nexus 6 does. While LTE and calling work fine, one other person that’s also trying a Moto X on Fi reports that Wi-Fi Calling isn't working and that they’re only seeing T-Mobile while out and about.

Google hasn’t announced plans to add any other phones to Project Fi, but the Moto X Pure Edition seems like it’d be the perfect candidate because it’s sold unlocked and works on all four major US carriers. Right now it seems as though the full Project Fi service isn’t working on the Moto X, which isn’t totally surprising since Google has special Android build for Nexus 6 models running on Project Fi. If the Moto X Pure Edition were officially supported on Fi, it would likely get special updates, too. Of course, it’s possible that this is just a coincidence because the Moto X is similar to the Nexus 6, and Google could end up killing the Moto X’s Project Fi support.

Here’s to hoping that Google does end up supporting the Moto X Pure Edition on Project Fi. Not only is the Moto X Pure Edition a smidge smaller than the Nexus 6, but it’s also got a beefed up camera and Moto Maker customization, both of which might make it more appealing than a Nexus 6 to some folks.
