Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be able to dance like the little girl from those old Missy Elliot videos? Did I just date myself with that reference? Looks like that’s going to start happening now that I’m 25. Getting back to my point, maybe you’re like me and never had any true dancing skills. Wouldn’t it be cool to at least see what you would look like busting a move? Okay, now that’s something my parents would say.
SnapDance, a free application available for both Android and iOS, is an app that puts you on the dance floor to showcase some cool moves. Let me be clear, this is not a dance game. This is a simple app that captures your likeness so that you can watch yourself or your friends dance to some music.
Here’s how it works: first, SnapDance will boot up and show three figures dancing. To add yourself to the dance party, hit the coordinate button to the right and tap on one of the figures that you’d like to replace. If you’re adding a new dancer, the app will walk you through the image capture process by having you take a few headshots along with some front and back full body images. Once everything has been captured, you’re ready to hit the dance floor.
At this point there’s really not much else to do but sit back and watch the fun. SnapDance reminds me of one of the first viral videos in which a baby would dance to that Blue Swede song. You can zoom in and out and move the camera around while you watch the dancing unfold, but that’s about all there is to the app. So while it is a fun, gimmicky app to mess around with, I’m not sure how much time can really be spent watching a cartoonish version of yourself dance to the same music over and over.
I will say that SnapDance’s presentation is smooth. The app runs quick and the music, while redundant and silly, does sound okay. The image capture feature is okay at best. The app utilizes a preset dancing model that you have to fit yourself into. This will require cropping off bits and pieces of yourself. And while this is sort of humorous, it’s a process that could be immensely improved.
The Wrap-up
The Good: SnapDance is a fun, quick app to laugh at. It can be entertaining to watch yourself or your friends dance.
The Bad: Repetitive music and poor image capturing. It feels like the app missing another mode.
The Verdict: Am I going to recommend SnapDance? I’m not so sure. I would show a friend or two my cool dance moves. The point is that in its current state, I don’t think SnapDance has longevity on anybody’s device. It may be fun to try, but after that first or second dance demonstration, users may find themselves looking for something else.
If you feel like checking SnapDance out for yourself, you can download it for free on Google Play and the App Store. Be sure to let us know what you think!
