It seems like the tech world has been abuzz with news about wearables given that MWC 2014 is over and we’re still a few days away from The All New HTC One announcement, which should be happening here come Tuesday. Most recently, we’ve been introduced to the new smartwatch software from Google, officially called Android Wear. Although other companies like Samsung, Sony, and Pebble have come out with smartwatches running on software of their own, which works with Android, Google’s software is going to be the real deal.
It’s also good to know that Android Wear works with both Android and iOS devices. However, this leads me to believe that we’re probably not that far off from seeing an Apple counter-product come along sometime within the year - perhaps even as soon as WWDC, which takes place during the summer.
The iWatch is somewhat of a mythical creature in mobile tech. The idea of an iWatch is something that is often talked about, yet never seen. Perhaps people have given up hope, since at one point in time Apple was oftentimes the “first” to make things happen in this industry. When it comes to the rise of wearable technology, I think a lot of people were expecting Apple to come out with something first. But just because Apple didn’t doesn’t mean that they don’t have something worth waiting for up their sleeve.
To me, the release of an iWatch would make sense, especially because Android Wear has a lot of big features compared to its smartwach counterparts right now. That’s not to say that the other smartwatches don’t have their own reasons for being considered, but when it comes to availability and usefulness, I feel like Android Wear has most of them beat at this point in time.
But when it all comes down to it, what would an iWatch need in order to truly rival Android Wear? In the end, I imagine it really comes down to how well Siri can battle Google Now, because voice control is key in creating a functional smartwatch. That, and long battery life.
Oh, and they have to make it available for Android as well, which probably won’t happen.
Well, maybe they don’t. It’s not like Apple is doing terribly for themselves or anything, but I think if they want to make it big in the smartwatch industry they’re going to have to branch out beyond their comfort zone and make the iWatch available for iOS and Android. You know, if they decide to make a smartwatch at all, because this is just purely speculation. There’s no guarantee that Apple is making a smartwatch at all, but given all of the attention smartwatches are getting, I imagine there’s probably something in the works somewhere.
