Less than a week after Verizon reported its Q2 2013 earnings, AT&T has followed suit with its own second quarter report. The big blue carrier today announced that it added a total of 632,000 wireless customers in the second quarter of 2013, 551,000 of which were postpaid customers. Breaking things down even further, AT&T says that it added 398,000 postpaid tablets in the quarter and 11,000 total prepaid subscribers.
Looking at hardware, AT&T reports that it sold 6.8 million smartphones in Q2 2013, which is a second quarter record for the operator. AT&T also says that Q2 saw it sell a record number of Android smartphones. In all, 73 percent (49.5 million) of AT&T's postpaid subscriber base owned a smartphone at the end of Q2 2013. Those customers need data to power those smartphones, and AT&T claims that more than 70 percent of its postpaid subscriber base is now on a usage-based data plan, which includes a tiered offering or a Mobile Share plan.
AT&T recently revealed that its 4G LTE network now covers 328 markets and over 225 million people. The operator today said that it plans to grow those numbers to 400 markets and 270 million POPs by the end of 2013, adding that it expects its LTE rollout to be "substantially complete" by the summer of 2014.
Rounding out AT&T's Q2 2014 results, the big blue carrier says that its wireless division pulled in $17.3 billion in revenue, an increase of 5.7 percent year-over-year. AT&T's wireless operating income finished the quarter at $4.7 billion, down 7.7 percent from the year-ago quarter.
Overall it sounds like AT&T had itself a respectable quarter with improved revenues, strong postpaid adds, and a record number of smartphone sales. The operator did see increases in both postpaid churn and total churn year-over-year, but it also notes that both types of churn are also down slightly from earlier in 2013.
