Smartwatches have grown quite a bit in popularity lately thanks to products from Pebble and Meta Watch, and recent rumors have suggested that we could soon see Apple and Samsung introduce new wristwear of their own soon. Now we can add a third name to the list of companies that are reportedly prepping a smartwatch, as The Financial Times claims that Google is hard at work on a watch as well. The publication's source says that Google's Android team is developing the watch, which is expected to "act as an extension to the smartphones using that operating system." It's also worth noting that Google's watch project is said to be separate from the one that Samsung is working on. It's not yet clear when Google is planning to launch its watch.
Obviously details on Google's purported smartwatch are still light, but the claim that the Android team is preparing a watch is sure to get many fans of El Goog's mobile operating system excited. As I've said before, smartwaches are certainly not a new product category; companies like Fossil, Samsung and Sony have already brought multiple smartwatch products to market. However, the smartwatch category seems gaining more traction with the public lately. While there's not a lot that we know about these new watches from Apple, Google and Samsung right now, it'll definitely be interesting to see what kinds of products these companies can cook up considering that they've got much more access to the operating systems that power our smartphones than firms like Pebble or Meta Watch do.
