The launch details for the new black Porsche Design P'9981 BlackBerry were scant when the device was first announced last month, but now we've learned exactly when the new smartphone will be made available for purchase. Harrods, a upscale department store in London, has announced on its Facebook page that the unit will be available from its Porsche Design shop starting tomorrow, Jan. 2. There aren't any pricing details mentioned on the page, but CrackBerry claims that the black P'9981's price will be set at £1390, which works out to be around $2,265.
This new black P'9981 is similar spec-wise to the original silver model that launched in 2011. That means that it's packing a 2.8-inch 640x480 touchscreen, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 8GB storage, 16GB microSD card and a 5-megapixel camera. Buyers will also get a special Porsche Design user interface that's laid on top of BlackBerry 7.1 as well as a "premium" PIN for BlackBerry Messenger.
Obviously the P'9981 isn't for everyone, but the blacked out look of this new model looks pretty slick, and I'm sure that the new paint job will attract some buyers. Harrods notes in its Facebook post that the black P'9981 will be available exclusively at the Porsche Design shop on the third floor of its store, so it looks like anyone interested in snagging one of these luxury smartphones will either need to make the trek to London or wait for some expanded availability. For those of you that'd like a better peek at the P'9981 without actually opening your wallet for one, you can check out our hands-on with the silver model below. Would any of you be interested in buying a P'9981 if you had the extra cash available?
