As was rumored earlier today, Apple has begun selling unlocked versions of the iPhone 5 on its website. The unlocked iPhone 5 models are GSM and are offered in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants for $649, $749 and $849, respectively. All of the variants are currently listed as being available to ship in one week.

Since the unlocked iPhone 5 is compatible with GSM networks, U.S. buyers can use the device with a carrier such as AT&T and T-Mobile, the latter of which has been refarming its 1900MHz network for HSPA+ coverage that the iPhone 5 can access. That 1900MHz HSPA+ service is live in 15 markets. T-Mobile customers in non-refarmed networks will only have access to the carrier's 2G EDGE service.

Apple notes that the unlocked iPhone 5 doesn't come with a nano-SIM, so buyers will need to get one from their carrier of choice.
