Our own Aaron Baker was recently wondering about the status of the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD, which was part of a handful of new Android phones announced by AT&T at CES. Now we've got our answer. Ryan Bidan, Samsung Mobile's director of product marketing, has told The Verge that the Skyrocket HD has been given the axe. He explained that, with the introduction of the Galaxy S III, it just doesn't make much sense to release the Skyrocket HD. However, Bidan wouldn't say whether or not AT&T will be launching the Galaxy S III, saying only that it'll be coming to "the fastest HSPA+ and LTE networks" in the U.S.

For those that don't recall, the Skyrocket HD's feature list included specs like a 4.65-inch 1280x720 HD Super AMOLED display, 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 4G LTE connectivity. AT&T said at the Skyrocket HD's January introduction that the phone would be launching "in the coming months," but there was never any mention of it afterward. Given that the Galaxy S III is due to hit the U.S. this summer, I can't say I blame AT&T and Samsung for canceling the Skyrocket HD. As for whether or not we'll see the Galaxy S III on AT&T, that's still up in the air. Considering the shelving of the Skyrocket HD and the fact that we've already seen Galaxy S and Galaxy S II variants on AT&T, though, I wouldn't be surprised if the carrier wanted to add the Galaxy S III to its roster as well.
