Android 2.3 Gingerbread has been slowly climbing the ranks of the operating system's distribution figures as more phones are updated and released with that particular dessert, and now it's been revealed that Gingerbread has finally risen to the top of the Android hill. Google recently released the latest Android OS distribution numbers for the two weeks ending November 3rd and Android 2.3 finished with 44.4 percent of all devices, surpassing Android 2.2 Froyo and its 40.7 percent share. The other remaining phone-specific versions of Android all ended October far behind 2.2 and 2.3: Android 2.1 Eclair had 10.7 percent, Android 1.6 Donut had 1.4 percent, and Android 1.5 Cupcake had 0.9 percent. Meanwhile, the tablet-friendly Android 3.x Honeycomb ended the two week period with 1.9 percent, a 0.1 percent jump from a month ago.
It's good to see that Gingerbread has finally surpassed Froyo in the world of Android smartphones. And even though 2.3 won't be the newest officially released version of Android for phones for much longer, handset manufacturers will need a little time to dig into Ice Cream Sandwich and prep updates for their devices, so folks not using a phone named Nexus will likely be on GBread for another couple of months. That's not necessarily a bad thing, though, considering that 2.3 is still a relatively fresh version of Android. How many of you are currently enjoying some Gingerbread on your handset?
