AOL recently announced a new "Open Mobile Platform" and their intentions to compete for a piece of the open source pie. The platform will consist of three parts; the general purpose markup language XML, a mobile device, and an application server.  Developers will also be able to monetize their applications through a number of different advertising methods; clickable text, banners, or maybe even video ads. AOL plans on having the platform ready by this summer.

Regardless of how cool or innovative the platform, device or applications become, AOL may have a long road ahead of them if they want to become a true player in the Open Source world of Google's Android.
