Dual-core processors seem to be all the rage lately, and today Qualcomm let out some information regarding both their 1.2 GHz and 1.5 GHz flavors of chips. Unfortunately for you true speed freaks out there, Qualcomm has said that while their 1.5 GHz QSD8672 Snapdragon processors will ship in the fourth quarter of this year, we won't be seeing the chips land in end-user gadgets until late next year. In the meantime, however, the 1.2 GHz dual-core MSM8X60 processors that we've heard about in the past are on track for public consumption early next year.
The fact that we're close to seeing dual-core processors appear in cell phones is quite an astounding feat. The downside to having all of this power in the palm of our hands, however, is the fact that battery technology for our handsets isn't evolving nearly as quickly as everyone would like. As it stands now, the average smartphone battery life seems to be about a day, meaning we have to charge our devices overnight. Let's hope that as we get faster chipsets put into our phones, the battery life can keep up. I don't know about you, but I don't want to worry about lugging around a second battery or extra charger just to keep my handset juiced.
