Much like it did when it launched the Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE last month, Apple today confirmed that its new iPhone 12 models do not include a wall charger in the box. That means that the packaging only includes the phone itself and a USB-C to Lightning cable.
All four new iPhone 12 models ship without wired EarPods earphones or a wall charger. Apple explains that it made this decision to help it reach its environmental goals, including reducing carbon emissions and avoids the mining and use of precious materials.
Additionally, Apple has removed the EarPods and wall charger from the iPhone 11, iPhone XR, and iPhone SE models. These devices now include just the phone and USB-C to Lightning cable, too.
Eliminating these accessories from the box also allows Apple to use a smaller box for its devices, which you can see above. This enables it to fit up to 70% more products on a shipping pallet, which helps to reduce carbon emissions in its global logistics chain.
While the decision to drop the wired earphones and wall charger from the box of its new iPhones is likely to frustrate some, Apple said during its presentation today that there are more than 700 million wired EarPods earphones and over 2 billion Apple wall chargers out in the world. So the company feels that most folks buying a new iPhone probably already have headphones and a wall charger that they're using.
