Apple today took the wraps off of its newest flagship smartphone, the iPhone 12.
The new iPhone 12 features an updated design with flat sides, reminiscent of the iPhone 4. While the iPhone 12 features the same 6.1-inch display size as the iPhone 11, it's being upgraded from an LCD to an OLED display with reduced bezels. The display resolution has been upgraded, too, moving to a 2532x1170 resolution.
Apple also touted today that it's worked with Corning on a new Ceramic Shield for the iPhone 12 that offers 4x better drop performance.
Around back, Apple is again using a dual camera setup. There's a 12MP ultra wide camera with 120-degree field of view and an updated 12MP wide camera with f/1.7 aperture and a 7-element lens that Apple touts will deliver a 27% improvement in low light performance. And speaking of low light, Apple is bringing its Night Mode photography to the ultra wide and front cameras.
The new A14 Bionic processor that Apple announced with the iPad Air last month is inside the iPhone 12, too. The new A14 Bionic processor that Apple announced with the iPad Air last month is inside the iPhone 12, too. It's built on a 5-nanometer process and according to Apple the A14's CPU and GPU are up to 50% faster than the "fastest competing smartphone chips".
5G connectivity is a new feature of the iPhone 12 series, and Apple says that all of the new iPhones will support high-speed mmWave 5G and sub-6GHz. Apple has included a new Smart Data Mode on its 5G-capable iPhones that'll automatically shift you to 4G when you don't need super-fast speeds to help save battery life, then switch back to 5G when you need to go fast again.
With iPhone 12, Apple is bringing back the MagSafe name. It was previously used for its laptop power adapters, but on the new iPhones with built-in magnets, MagSafe will magnetically attach your iPhone to a supported wireless charger to ensure perfect placement every time. MagSafe offers wireless charging speeds up to 15W.
Apple says its going to offer MagSafe accessories for its new iPhones, including a MagSafe wireless charger and a MagSafe Duo charger that adds an Apple Watch charger as well. There will be Apple cases that take advantage of MagSafe and a wallet that you can magnetically attach to the back of your iPhone.
The iPhone 12 will be available for pre-order in more than 30 countries starting this Friday, October 16, at 5:00 am PT / 8:00 am ET. Pricing starts at $799 and storage options will include 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. The colors that'll be available include blue, green, black, white, and (PRODUCT)RED.
