Emoji 13.0 is rolling out this year and bringing 117 new emoji characters to Android and iOS. And next year another 217 new emoji are coming.
A total of 217 new emoji characters have been approved by Unicode and will be released as the Emoji 13.1 update. As noted by Emojipedia, this is because the full update to Unicode 14.0 has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Included in the Emoji 13.1 update are new smiley faces include a face exhaling, a face in the clouds, and a face with spiral eyes. There's also a mending heart and a heart on fire.
This update expands the use of beards on emoji faces, making a gender-neutral face with a beard as well as bearded options for both men and women. Each of those three bearded faces include several skin tone options as well.
Lastly, the Emoji 13.1 update brings more skin tone options for the Couple With Heart and Kiss emojis.
While these new Emoji 13.1 characters have now been finalized by Unicode, it may still be a bit before they're available on Android and iOS devices. Google just released the Unicode 13.0 emoji as part of Android 11 and Apple hasn't yet rolled them out to iOS users. The new Emoji 13.1 characters likely won't begin hitting mobile phones until sometime in 2021. Google did publish its characters for Emoji 13.1 on Github, though, so you can preview them there.
