T-Mobile is expanding its 2.5GHz 5G to more cities.
T-Mo confirmed this week that its 2.5GHz 5G coverage is now available in parts of Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles (via TmoNews). There aren't any maps yet that show exactly where in these cities the 2.5GHz 5G is available, though.
With the addition of Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles, T-Mobile's 2.5GHz 5G is now available in 5 cities. T-Mo previously activated the coverage in Philadelphia and New York City, too.
T-Mobile already had its 600MHz 5G coverage live in these 3 cities, but the addition of 2.5GHz 5G is still notable. That's because these 2.5GHz airwaves that T-Mo acquired as part of its merger with Sprint can increase capacity and speeds. Average speeds with 2.5GHz 5G are reaching 330Mbps while peak speeds are passing 1Gbps.
You will need a device compatible with 2.5GHz 5G to take advantage of the increased capacity and speeds. The good news is that there are several T-Mobile devices that can latch on to a 2.5GHz 5G signal, including the Galaxy S20 series, the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G, the OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren, the OnePlus 8 5G, and the LG V60 ThinQ 5G.
One of the main benefits that T-Mobile touted that its merger with Sprint would bring is better 5G for consumers, and that's what T-Mo customers are getting with this 2.5GHz 5G rollout. It's taking some time for T-Mobile to repurpose Sprint's 2.5GHz airwaves for T-Mo 5G, but when that service goes live in your market, the wait should be worth it.
