Alongside the new Snapdragon 865 processor, Qualcomm today announced a new and improved in-display fingerprint sensor for smartphones.
The 3D Sonic Max is the newest version of Qualcomm's ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. It's got a scanning area that's 17x larger than Qualcomm's previous in-display fingerprint sensor, measuring 20mm x 30mm for a 600 square millimeter scanning area.
This increased scanning area is a huge improvement for the new 3D Sonic Max because it results in increased security through simultaneous two-finger authentication. Because the bigger size enables the 3D Sonic Max to scan more of your fingers, it can gather more data on your fingerprint and help to keep your data more secure.
Qualcomm isn't saying much else about the 3D Sonic Max or when we might begin to see it in smartphones, but like the Snapdragon 865, we wouldn't be surprised if new Android phones began coming to market with the bigger 3D Sonic Max ultrasonic fingerprint sensor next year.
