Amazon has largely stayed out of the mobile business ever since the Fire Phone failed to make an impact in mid-2014, but the retailer may soon make a big splash in mobile.
Amazon is reportedly interested in buying Boost Mobile from T-Mobile and Sprint. The two carriers have said that they'd divest Boost if their merger is approved by the U.S. government, and according to Reuters sources, Amazon is considering buying Boost Mobile.
The report goes on to say that Amazon is largely interested in Boost Mobile because of the attached wholesale deal that would let Boost's buyer use the T-Mobile network for at least six years. However, Amazon would also be interested in any spectrum that T-Mo and Sprint might divest as part of their merger completion.
Whoever does buy Boost Mobile will be subject to the scrutiny of the U.S. Justice Department, who'd ensure that the buyer would be able to remain viable and competitive in the U.S. wireless market.
There's been no evidence recently that would indicate that Amazon is interested in becoming a wireless carrier. However, T-Mobile has said that if it merges with Sprint, it'll have a "broad and deep" 5G network, and so Amazon might see buying Boost Mobile and getting access to that network as a business opportunity that doesn't come along often.
