Ever since the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro were upgraded to Android 11, owners of the OnePlus 7 and 7T have probably been wondering when their updates will arrive. Unfortunately for them, it looks like they'll be waiting a bit longer.
OnePlus has said that its Android 11 updates for the OnePlus 7 and 7T have been delayed. The announcement was made in OnePlus's official Chinese forum (via Android Police), and while this statement is about the Hydrogen OS software that OnePlus uses in China, it likely also affects Oxygen OS devices in other parts of the world since the two OSes share a codebase.
As for why the update is being delayed, OnePlus cites a data decryption failure that happens during the Android 11 upgrade process. OnePlus says that it's working with Qualcomm on a fix — the OnePlus 7 and 7T are powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 and 855 Plus processors — and that a solution is expected this week.
If all goes according to plan, OnePlus expects to begin closed beta testing of Android 11 for the OnePlus 7 and 7T this month. Open beta testing will begin "as soon as possible", but there's no exact start date for that beta or for the public release.
It's already been a couple of months since the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro were updated to Android 11, and so there might be some OnePlus 7 and 7T owners who are frustrated that they probably won't get their upgrade until 2021. Hopefully OnePlus and Qualcomm can get this issue ironed out quickly so that folks who have an OP7 or 7T can start the new year with a new version of Android.
