Google Stadia launching on iOS soon as a web app

Today is Stadia's first birthday, and Google is celebrating by opening its cloud gaming service up to a ton more people.

Google is bringing Stadia to iOS. Public testing will begin "several weeks from now," Google told Polygon, but no precise launch date has been announced quite yet.

One thing we do know is that Google Stadia will not be a native app on iOS like it is on Android. Instead, Google will use a web app to get around Apple's App Store rules, much like Amazon is doing with its Luna game streaming service.

Apple previously did not allow game streaming services on the App Store at all. A couple of months ago, it updated its App Store rules to allow these services, but the it requires each individual game to be submitted for review as an individual app complete with its own App Store page. That's a lot of work for companies that own game streaming services, which explains why Google and Amazon are going the web app route instead.

In other Stadia news, Google revealed today that if you buy Cyberpunk 2077 on Stadia before December 18, you'll get a free Stadia Premiere Edition. This bundle normally costs $100 and includes a Stadia Controller plus a Chromecast Ultra to let you play Stadia on your TV.
