A major new Google Stadia feature has officially started rolling out today.
Google has confirmed that Stadia is getting a new family sharing feature. It's beginning to show up for Stadia players today, but Google cautions that the rollout will take about a week to reach everyone on Stadia.
With family sharing, a Stadia user can share games with anyone in their Google family group. You don't need to be a Stadia Pro subscriber to share games or play shared games. Stadia Pro subscribers even have the ability to share games that they've gotten free with their Pro subscription, but those games will stop being shared if the Pro subscription ends.
If you're ready to share your Stadia games with your family group, you can start by creating a group with the same email address you used to set up Stadia. This can be done on the Stadia website or in the Stadia app (Android, iOS). Once you've got family sharing set up, you can choose to share your whole library of games or only share specific titles.
Google does say that a shared game can only be played by one member of a family group at a time. If someone in a group is currently playing a shared game, the other members of that group will see the family sharing icon instead of the play icon when they try to launch it.
Also of note is that each family member will have their own save data for shared games. And that data will not be deleted if a game stops being shared. Instead, you can buy the game on your own account and your save data will be restored so that you can pick up right where you left off.
Family sharing is a big addition for both Stadia players and for Google itself. Stadia players can share games with their friends, similar to how you can lend a physical game to your friend. And for Google, family sharing can help to expose more people to Stadia and potentially get them to buy their own games or sign up for a Pro subscription.
