Apple has been steadily upgrading its recent iPhone models to use OLED displays rather than LCD screens, and with the iPhone 12 series, all four models have OLED. Now a new report says Apple is planning a display upgrade for the iPad, too.
A new iPad that uses Mini-LED display technology will reportedly launch early next year. A report from ETNews (via MacRumors) says that Apple has tapped LG Display for the Mini-LED screens destined for this new iPad model.
Today's report doesn't include many other details about this new iPad model, but past reports have suggested that it could be an iPad Pro model with a 12.9-inch display. Also rumored to be included with this iPad Pro is a new A14X processor and 5G support.
If this is a new iPad Pro model that's getting a Mini-LED display, it could launch in the first quarter of 2021. Apple last updated the iPad Pro in mid-March 2020, and so an upgraded model coming one year later would make sense timing-wise.
An upgrade to a Mini-LED display could give the iPad Pro higher brightness, improved contrast ratio, and better power efficiency. The iPad Pro already offers a 120Hz refresh rate, so moving to a Mini-LED screen would be a logical next upgrade for Apple to make to its pro tablet.
