After weeks of teases, OnePlus today officially took the wraps off of its newest smartphone, the OnePlus 8T.
While the OnePlus 8T may look similar to the OnePlus 8 that launched earlier this year, there are a few major upgrades to be aware of. The first is the most obvious one, and that's the updated rear camera bump. Not only has it moved from the center of the OnePlus 8's backside to the upper-left corner of the 8T, but there's an extra sensor on there now, too.
The main camera on the OnePlus 8T is a 48MP cam with Sony IMX586 sensor, 0.8µm pixel size, and f/1.7 aperture, which is similar to the OnePlus 8. Both optical image stabilization and electronic image stabilization are included, too. There's a 16MP ultra wide camera with 123-degree field of view, an upgraded 5MP macro camera for all your close-up shots, and a new 2MP monochrome lens.
OnePlus also says that moving the placement of the rear cameras to the upper left corner of the phone's backside brought improvements. The change helped to free up space on the inside of the device, giving the OnePlus 8T more efficient thermal performance and and an improved antenna placement that leads to stronger network connections.
Around front is another one of the OnePlus 8T's upgrades. The display is a flat 6.55-inch 2400x1080 AMOLED panel like on the OnePlus 8, but the 8T comes with a 120Hz refresh rate while the 8 used a 90Hz refresh rate, giving the 8T smoother animations and scrolling.
A third upgrade can be found inside the OnePlus 8T. Not only is the battery powering the 8T bigger than the one found inside the 8, measuring in at 4500mAh vs 4300mAh, but there's also faster charging to help you refill that battery more quickly. OnePlus has included Warp Charge 65 which boasts up to 65W fast charging, which can refill the OnePlus 8T's battery from 0 to 100% in just 39 minutes.
The 65W power adapter included with the OnePlus 8T can be used to fast charge other devices, too, offering speeds up to 45W. And if you forget the Warp Charge 65 adapter at home, you can still use other power adapters to charge your OnePlus 8T at speeds up to 27W.
Other features of the OnePlus 8T include a Snapdragon 865 processor paired with either 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB or 256GB of built-in storage. This is UFS 3.1 storage, which offers faster performance over the UFS 3.0 storage found in the OnePlus 8. That means that recording and playing 4K video will be smoother and drain less battery.
There's a fingerprint reader built into the display of the OnePlus 8T and a 16MP hole-punch selfie camera located in the upper left corner of the screen. Dual stereo speakers are included, too, as is NFC for mobile payments and Bluetooth 5.1. The inclusion of the Snapdragon 865 means 5G support is in the OnePlus 8T as well.
On the software side, the OnePlus 8T comes preloaded with OxygenOS 11, which is based on Android 11. OnePlus has made several upgrades to this version of OxygenOS, including a fresh new design with new gestures and navigation meant to make one-handed navigation easier. There's a customizable Always On Display that can show things like time, date, notifications, battery status, messages, and more, and the improved Dark Mode uses readjusted color tones to make content easier to read.
The OnePlus 8T is available for pre-sale from OnePlus today for $749 and it'll launch on October 23 at 8:00 am PT / 11:00 am ET. In Europe, pre-orders will begin today and pricing will be €599 for the 8GB/128GB version and €699 for the 12GB/256GB model. The 8T be available in two color options: Aquamarine Green and Lunar Silver.
T-Mobile will also sell the 8T in the US under the name "OnePlus 8T+ 5G".
