T-Mobile activates mid-band 5G in 121 new cities and towns

T-Mobile's 5G network is growing again, with the carrier activating its mid-band 5G coverage in 121 new markets today.

T-Mo says that its mid-band, 2.5GHz 5G is now live in cities like Arlington, VA; Trenton, NJ; St. Joseph, MO; Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN; Kankakee, IL; and Wilmington, DE. You can find the full list of cities with new T-Mobile mid-band 5G coverage below.

Today's expansion means that T-Mobile's mid-band 5G is now available in a total of 210 cities and towns across the US. And T-Mo plans to add many more to that number in the remaining months of the year. T-Mobile says that its mid-band 5G will come to "thousands more" cities by the end of 2020.

There's some good news today for folks who already have T-Mobile mid-band 5G coverage, too. T-Mo said that in addition to lighting up new cities, it's improving mid-band 5G in existing cities, like New York City where it has added 10x more mid-band 5G sites since May. That's resulted in 25x more mid-band 5G coverage and 10x more mid-band capacity in NYC.

Mid-band 5G is the middle layer of T-Mobile's 5G "layer cake". It has better reach and building penetration than high-band mmWave 5G, which T-Mo offers in a handful of cities, while also offering faster speeds than the T-Mobile's nationwide low-band 5G. T-Mo says that in areas with mid-band 5G, customers are averaging download speeds of 300Mbps.
