Apple today announced the Apple Watch Series 6 with several new features, but there's one notable thing missing from the Series 6 that previous Apple Watch models had.
The Apple Watch Series 6 and the Apple Watch SE both ship without a power adapter in the box. Apple first mentioned the change during its event today, describing it as an environmental decision, and the Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE product pages confirm the change.
"As part of our efforts to reach our environmental goals, Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 3, and Apple Watch Nike do not include a power adapter," Apple explains. "Please use your existing Apple Watch power adapter or add a new one before you check out."
The new Apple Watch models do still ship with a 1M magnetic charging cable in the box. You'll just have to supply your own power adapter to plug that charging cable into.
A report earlier this year claimed that Apple will not include a power adapter with the iPhone 12, and so Apple's decision to remove the power adapter from the Apple Watches could be evidence that it's planning to do the same with the next iPhone.
Many people already own a smartphone, tablet, or other mobile device that came with a power adapter, so Apple removing the power adapter from the new Apple Watch and possibly the iPhone could help to cut down on electronic waste. It can also lead to smaller packaging, which would also be better for the environment.
The iPhone sells quite a bit more than the Apple Watch, so it'll be interesting to see if Apple does indeed remove the power adapter from the iPhone 12 box. Doing so could be even better for the environment, but it could also frustrate more people since the iPhone is a bigger product.
What do you think of the decision to remove the power adapter from the box of a new smartphone or smartwatch? Do you think Apple will do this with the iPhone 12?
