Google Duo has become a popular video calling app in the four years since its launch, but a new report says that Google is going to eventually replace it with another app.
Google is reportedly planning to replace Duo with Meet. A report from 9to5Google claims that G Suite leader Javier Soltero, who was recently put in charge of consumer communication services like Duo and Messages, has told his team that it doesn't make sense for the Duo and Meet video calling apps to coexist.
Inside of Google, this process is described as a merging of Duo and Meet that's codenamed "Duet". The merging of the two apps will include key Duo features being brought over to Meet, including end-to-end encryption, contacting users for a video call using a phone number, and 3D effects, before Duo is completely replaced by Meet.
This merger of the two services means that development of Duo is winding down. This doesn't mean that Duo is going to disappear next month, though, as it's said that the entire process of merging Duo and Meet could take up to two years.
When asked about this report, Google didn't exactly deny it. The company said that it is "fully invested in Duo" and that it plans to "continue to invest in building new Duo features," which 9to5Google suggest could include adding new seasonal face filters.
Google did add that it's "looking at ways that our video calling products can improve alongside one another," which could be a hint that Duo and Meet will eventually merge.
Google is no stranger to eliminating communication apps and replacing them with something else. Typically we see this with chat apps, but it could certainly happen with Duo as well. While Duo has proven successful, usage of Google Meet has surpassed Duo in recent months, with Google saying back in April that Meet was adding 3 million users every day (or 21 million per week) while Duo was adding 10 million new users weekly.
And while Meet was originally launched as an enterprise-focused video chat service, Google recently made it free for everyone in response to the coronavirus pandemic and the popularity of Zoom, another video calling app that used to be focused on business. Now Google is reportedly working to merge Duo features into Meet so that the latter can eventually replace the former, which would streamline Google's communication apps a bit and make things a bit less confusing for consumers.
