Microsoft and TikTok may sound like two things that would never have anything to do with one another, but according to new reports, Microsoft may buy the popular app.
Microsoft is reportedly in talks to buy TikTok's US business. That's according to a report from Bloomberg, which also said today that President Trump is planning to order TikTok's owner to divest its US ownership of the popular app.
TikTok is owned by Chinese company ByteDance. The US government is said to have national security concerns about the app, worrying that the Chinese government could use TikTok to gather data on US citizens.
It's unclear exactly when Trump might order ByteDance to divest its US ownership of TikTok, but this week the president has been threatening to ban the app. "We are looking at TikTok. We may be banning TikTok," Trump said today. "We are looking at a lot of alternatives with respect to TikTok."
A Microsoft purchase of TikTok might seem kind of strange, but the company could be interested in the app as a way to get back into social. TikTok is an extremely popular social media app that lets you share videos, including with music. Microsoft killed off its Mixer game streaming service this week, and so a TikTok acquisition could be a way for Microsoft to instantly get its hands on a popular social media app.
