Automatic is a product that's been around for years, combining a device that you plug into your car's OBD-II port with an app on your Android or iPhone to help you log your trips, diagnose engine issues, and more. Unfortunately, it'll soon be shutting down.
Automatic announced this week that it will be ceasing all operations at 11:59 pm PT on May 28. All services will remain active until then, but once that time rolls around, all of Automatic's features will stop working.
All user information and driving data can be exported from Automatic through June 28. After that date, personal info and the associated driving data will be permanently deleted from Automatic's records.
If you've purchased an Automatic adapter and service, you may be eligible for a rebate. The company is offering rebates on the Automatic Pro, Automatic Lite, Automatic Connected Car Assistant, and Automatic Classic with promotional upgrade to CCA, with the amount of the rebate varying between those devices. If you purchased an adapter from Automatic or a retailer, you can fill out a rebate form and include a receipt to request a rebate.
As for why Automatic is shutting down, the company says that the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has impacted its business:
"With fewer consumers purchasing and leasing vehicles and drivers on the road, we unfortunately do not see a path forward for our business. These are unprecedented times, and with so much uncertainty ahead, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue the Automatic connected car product, service, and platform."
