One of the new features added to iPhones in recent years is eSIM support, which lets you activate cellular service on your device without a physical SIM card. Now Google Fi has added support for iPhone eSIM.
A new Google support page confirms that you can activate Google Fi on iPhones with an eSIM (via 9to5Google). The page says that iPhone eSIM activation only works for new Google Fi customers, and a Google employee adds that this feature is still rolling out, so it may not be available to everyone right now.
The devices that support this feature include the iPhone XS and XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, and iPhone 11. The new iPhone SE also has eSIM support according to its specs page, so it may also work.
To activate Google Fi on your iPhone eSIM, go to the Fi website and tap "Join Fi" in the upper right corner. You'll then select your phone and download the Google Fi app for iPhone, and once you've opted in to eSIM activation on the Fi website, the app will perform compatibility checks on your phone.
You'll then be able to select "Get started" to begin eSIM activation and go to this website. There you'll sign in to your account and scan a QR code with the iPhone you want to activate Google Fi on.
eSIM can be very convenient for several reasons. It lets you turn on service right away because you don't need to wait around for a physical SIM to come to you, and it enables you to have access to two networks on one device, which could be handy for things like traveling internationally.
iPhones don't have all the same Google Fi features as Designed for Fi Android phones, like network switching. You do get calls, texts, and data over T-Mobile as well as international roaming, though, and iMessage is supported as well as texting with some additional setup.
