Many Android devices come with their own phone app made by the device manufacturer, but now some folks are able to install Google's own dialer app that comes with Pixel phones.
It's been discovered that some non-Google devices are now able to download Google's Phone app from the Play Store. The folks at XDA-Developers report that the app has successfully been installed on an ASUS ZenFone 6, Oppo Find X2 Pro, and LG V60 ThinQ.
Once installed and given all the necessary permissions, the Google Phone app works just like you'd expect on these non-Google devices. You can send and receive calls and get features like Assisted Dialing, Caller ID, and Nearby Places, though Pixel-specific features like Call Screen don't work.
Weirdly, this app doesn't seem to work on Samsung and OnePlus devices. XDA speculates that this is because the Google Phone app requires a specific shared library to be present on the phone. That shared library is available on the Oppo Find X2 Pro and ASUS ZenFone 6, for example, but it's not on the Samsung Galaxy S20.
Each phone has its own phone app, so it's not like anyone really needs to be able to install Google's Phone app, but some folks may just prefer the look of Google's app or they may want to have Google's own phone app instead of the one their manufacturer made. It's kind of strange that Google's Phone app is now working with non-Google phones out of the blue, but hey, we're not going to complain about having the option to install it on more devices.
Are you able to install Google's Phone app on your device?
