A new Samsung flagship is now official, and just like the past several Galaxy S and Note flagships before it, the Galaxy S20 Ultra has now had its screen put under a microscope by the folks at DisplayMate.
The Galaxy S20 Ultra has earned a Best Smartphone Display Award from DisplayMate along with the group's "Highest A+ Rating". Samsung's new flagship sets or matches 12 smartphone display performance records and matches or beats several of the scores put up by the Note 10+ in the same test last year.
DisplayMate says the Galaxy S20 Ultra has a peak display brightness of 1,342 nits, up from the Note 10+'s peak display brightness of 1,308 nits. The S20 Ultra also bested the Note 10+ in full screen brightness, with the former getting 828 nits while the latter was 793 nits.
The S20 Ultra didn't quite beat out the Note 10+ in some categories, but it did come pretty close. For example, the S20 Ultra scored a 0.5 Just Noticeable Color Difference in the Absolute Color Accuracy rating while the Note 10+ got a 0.4, but DisplayMate still classified the S20 Ultra's performance is "Visually Indistinguishable From Perfect."
Screen Reflectance was another category where the S20 Ultra was only slightly behind the Note 10+, with the former getting 4.4 percent and the latter 4.3 percent.
"Based on our extensive Lab Tests and Measurements the Galaxy S20 Ultra has a Very Impressive Excellent Top Tier World Class Smartphone Display with close to Text Book Perfect Calibration Accuracy and Performance that is Visually Indistinguishable From Perfect," says the conclusion of DisplayMate's report on the S20 Ultra's screen.
We've seen screens on the past several Samsung Galaxy flagships get high marks from DisplayMate, and so it's no surprise to see the same thing for the Galaxy S20 Ultra. So if you're interested in the new Samsung flagship, you can buy it and know that the 6.9-inch 3200x1440 Dynamic OLED screen is awesome.
