Apple's update to iOS 13 brought with it lots of new features, including improvements to Siri that let you use the assistant with third-party audio apps like you would with Apple's own audio apps. Now it looks like Spotify is getting ready to add the feature to its iOS app.
A new beta version of Spotify's iOS app includes the ability to play songs, albums, and playlists using Siri. As spotted by The Verge, you just need to say something like, "Hey Siri, play Tsunami Bomb on Spotify" and your music will begin playing. The feature works on iPhone but not on Apple Watch since Spotify doesn't have a dedicated Watch app.
This feature is currently only available in the beta version of Spotify's app, and there's no word on when it might launch to the public. Spotify didn't really shed much light on its plans for the feature, offering the following statement about it:
“At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience. Some of those tests end up paving the path for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning. We aren’t going to comment on specific tests at this time."
This feature isn't quite as smooth as using Siri to launch an Apple app because you'll need to add "on Spotify" to the end of all your requests, but it's still exciting to see Spotify adding Siri playback support. The feature ought to be a quick way to start playing some music when you know exactly what you want to hear, and we're betting that a lot of Spotify subscribers will be happy to have a feature similar to the one that Apple Music subscribers have been enjoying for awhile now.
