One of the major new features of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro is Night Mode, which will help owners take better photos in low-light situations. Apple isn't launching its new iPhones until next week, but we're getting an early look at their Night Mode chops today.
A sample image of Night Mode on the iPhone 11 Pro Max was posted today by Coco Rocha, model and owner of Nomad Management Modeling Agency. A similar image was taken with an iPhone X so that we can compare the iPhone 11 Pro Max's image with a shot from another recent iPhone. There's a pretty big difference between the two, with the iPhone 11 Pro Max photo being bright and clear and the iPhone X shot being very dark.
Night Mode comes with all three of Apple's iPhone 11 models. The feature utilizes the new wide camera sensor on the new iPhones and comes on automatically.
When Night Mode is activated, your iPhone takes multiple images. The camera software then performs a few actions on the photos taken, like aligning them to correct for movement, discard parts with too much blur and fuses the sharper ones, adjusts contrast, and fine-tunes the colors so they look natural. The software also de-noises and enhances details, then spits out your final shot.
Camera night modes have become super popular recently, with manufacturers like Google and Samsung adding dedicated night modes to their phones' camera apps to help people get better low-light shots. It's good to see Apple finally bring a night mode to the iPhone with the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro, and we're looking forward to getting the new devices in our hands to see how Apple's Night Mode compares to competing night modes.
The iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max will be available for pre-order starting tomorrow, September 13, at 5:00 am PT/8:00 am ET. They'll launch one week later on September 20.
