Chrome OS will gain iPhone USB tethering support

Use a Chromebook and an iPhone as your mobile computing combo? If so, there's a new feature coming soon that should interest you.

Chrome OS is adding support for iPhone USB tethering. Spotted in a Chromium commit, the feature will let you use your iPhone to get your Chromebook online using a USB connection rather than a wireless mobile hotspot.

The commit notes that iPhone tethering using USB consumes less of your phone's battery than a wireless mobile hotspot and is more reliable, too. While using a wireless mobile hotspot may be more convenient, USB tethering does have benefits that make it worth taking the extra time to dig out a USB cable and plug your iPhone into your Chromebook.

Unfortunately, there's no word on when the feature will be released to the public. Chrome Unboxed points out that because it's being enabled on the kernel level, iPhone USB tethering ought to be offered on all Chrome OS devices, so your Chomebook and iPhone owners do have that to look forward to.
