MoviePass was once one of the most talked-about mobile apps around, letting you see a movie every day for $9.95 per month. Things haven't been going so well for it lately, though, and this week the saga of MoviePass took a strange turn.
MoviePass stopped working for subscribers as of 5:00 am ET on July 4th. The company explains that these are "maintenance-related issues" and that its service has been "put on a temporary hold."
In its alert to subscribers, MoviePass goes on to say that it plans to improve its mobile app using an "enhanced technology platform" that is in the "final stages of completion." There's no exact date for when MoviePass will work again, but the company is telling its customers that the process could take "several weeks."
Due to maintenance related issues, MoviePass services have been put on a temporary hold. Once we have resolved these technical problems, the service will be live again. We estimate this process will take several weeks. We sincerely appreciate your patience.

The good news here is that subscribers will not be charged during this downtime and they'll be automatically credited for the number of days that service is affected once it goes live again. MoviePass is not accepting any new subscribers, either.
MoviePass had 3 million subscribers at one point, but the company has been losing subscribers amid changes like Peak Pricing and its $9.95 plan only allowing subscribers to see three films each month. Recent reports say that MoviePass went from having 3 million subscribers last year to 225,000 subs in under a year. It's unclear when service might resume for those customers, but with MoviePass promising to improve its app using an "enhanced technology platform", it'll be interesting to see how it works when MoviePass does come back online.
