Lots of streaming music services offer offline listening, letting you download tracks to play when you don't have an internet connection. The problem is that sometimes you forget to download new music, or any music at all, before you go offline. A new YouTube Music feature aims to help you avoid that issue.
Smart Downloads will automatically download up to 500 songs for offline listening. That includes an Offline Mixtape with 100 songs based on your listening history, YouTube told The Verge, as well as songs from your Liked Songs playlists and your other favorite playlists and albums. For example, you might get "Offline Mixtape, Pop Hotlist, Summer 2019 playlist, Kacey Musgraves album."
With this feature, YouTube Music will only download songs at night when your phone is connected to Wi-Fi. You can also set a limit for how much music Smart Downloads will save if you don't want it eating up a bunch of your storage.
While manually choosing music to download for offline listening is always an option, this Smart Downloads feature could come in handy in some situations. For example, you might be getting ready for a long flight tomorrow and you're so busy packing that you forget to save music for yourself. Other folks may just not want to manually save music and instead have the YouTube Music app do it for them.
