Pixel 3a ships with old security patches, but it'll be updated in June

If you've already got a Pixel 3a or are planning to grab one in the near future, there's something you should know about its security updates.

The Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL ship with the March 2019 Android security patches. That's strange since the phones are launching in May 2019, but because these are Google phones, they'll surely be brought up to date soon, right? Not so, says Google.

Google has confirmed that the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL will receive an update on June 3rd that will bundle the April, May, and June security updates together. The company says that this will "ensure the best customer experience." Google added that the software that comes preloaded on the Pixel 3a is based on its manufacturing schedule.

Also of note is that Google has said that the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL will be eligible to try Android Q in the Android Beta Program in June. The Android Q roadmap puts a Beta 4 release in early June, so it's possible that the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL will join in on the Android Q beta action then.

One of the highlight features of the Pixel phones is that they get updates straight from Google, which means that they're typically some of the first Android phones to get the latest OS and security updates. That makes the fact that the Pixel 3a is launching with months-old security patches so strange. The good news is that at least we know that Google will bring the Pixel 3a up-to-date next month, and from there it should get updates just like any other Pixel device.
