Samsung came out swinging a couple of months ago when it announced the Galaxy S10 lineup. Not just one, two, or even three models. The company unveiled four variants of its newest flagship smartphone. Different specs, different features (or tweaked from one model to the next), and different price points.
Samsung wanted a Galaxy S10 for just about everyone who might want one, and so far it looks like that's been a success.
The cheapest model of the bunch, the Galaxy S10e, still brings plenty to the table and it's a powerful handset in its own right. But, for some, things only really get interesting (and truly flagship) with the Galaxy S10+. But as you might expect it's not a cheap smartphone. It starts at $999 and goes all the way up to $1,599.99 (!) for the model with 1TB of built-in storage. That's a lot of phone.
Samsung opened up pre-orders for the final variant, the Galaxy S10 5G, which starts at $1,299.99 and goes up to $1,399.99 for the 256GB and 512GB models, respectively. These aren't cheap phones, but, maybe the good news is that thanks to the iPhone X we're all used to this by now. Some high-end phones just aren't going to be what they used to be, price wise.
Whether or not the price tag is actually worth it will come down to the individual. The justification for the companies at this point is that these smartphones are a daily use for most people, and, for some, the most important device they own. So pony up the cash for the best possible device you can get (and then upgrade in a year, thanks!). At over $1,000 it's good we have monthly installment plans from the carriers and manufacturers at this point.
But the installment plans might not make it worthwhile to some. An expensive phone might just be too expensive, no matter how you have to hand over the cash for it. But maybe the specs and features just make it all a must-buy at launch.
