Samsung has just announced its first foldable smartphone for the consumer market. A lot of the rumors were true, at least in part, and the handset is indeed a powerful device.
The Galaxy Fold is a high-end handset, which does offer a foldable design. There is a 4.6-inch display on the front (when the device is closed). When it is unfolded, the handset boasts a 7.3-inch "Infinity Flex" display. Samsung says the hinge system is an all-new design, which is meant to not showcase itself or be seen at all when the phone is closed. There are three cameras on the back (the company didn't go into specifics in this regard), along with two cameras on the inside, and one camera on the front. That's six cameras in total.
As far as the specifications are concerned, the Galaxy Fold boasts 512GB of built-in storage and 12GB of RAM. The processor inside is built on the 7nm manufacturing process. And Samsung confirmed that there are two batteries, one in each side of the phone. Samsung made it so that three apps could be run at the same time when the Galaxy Fold is unfolded, positioned in a tiled fashion to make using them as easy as possibe.
A feature called "app continuity" will allow future owners to start using an app when the phone is closed, and then keep using it when it is unfolded -- all without pausing the experience. Samsung showed this off with Google Maps, where the map started small on the outer display, then opened up fluidly to a much larger version of the map once the device was unfolded.
Samsung confirmed that there will be two variants: 4G LTE and 5G. The Galaxy Fold will start at $1,980, and it launches on April 26 of this year.
