Days after Qualcomm won a sales ban on select iPhone models in China, Apple says that it believes it's found a way to counter the ban.

Apple has confirmed that it will push software updates to the iPhone models facing a sales ban in China, and it believes that that will address the issue at hand. "Based on the iPhone models we offer today in China, we believe we are in compliance," Apple said. "Early next week we will deliver a software update for iPhone users in China addressing the minor functionality of the two patents at issue in the case."

Earlier this week, a court in China granted two preliminary injunctions against four Chinese subsidiaries of Apple after ruling that two Qualcomm patents had been infringed. The affected models include the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X.

Apple has said that all of its phones are still on sale in mainland China and that it has filed an appeal with the court.

While Apple is working on software updates to clear its older phones, Qualcomm is shifting its focus to Apple's newer models. Qualcomm is now asking the courts in China to ban the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, with suits targeting those phones currently pending. "We plan to use the same patents to file suit against the three new iPhone models," said Jiang Hongyi, a lawyer representing Qualcomm.
