Amazon Echo is gaining a major new feature next month.
Amazon announced today that its Echo speakers will gain support for Apple Music on December 17. That means that Apple Music subscribers will be able to ask Alexa to play tunes from Apple Music, including playlists and radio stations.
To enable Apple Music playback on their Amazon Echo devices, customers will need to enable the Apple Music skill in the Alexa app and link their Apple Music account.
Amazon Echo already supports music services like Spotify, Pandora, and iHeartRadio, but the addition of Apple Music is big. Not only does Apple Music have a large subscriber base, but up until now, you'd needed an Apple HomePod if you wanted a smart speaker that could play Apple Music. Much like bringing Apple Music to Android, though, it's important for Apple to expand Apple Music's availability if it wants to grow the service and get people interested in trying it, and allowing Apple Music playback on Echo devices helps to make Apple Music better.
