Heads up, T-Mobile and MetroPCS customers, because there's been a security breach at your carrier.
T-Mobile confirmed today that it experienced a data breach on August 20th. The carrier says that no financial data, credit card info, social security numbers, or passwords were compromised. However, some personal info may have been exposed to the malicious party, including customer names, billing zip codes, phone numbers, email addresses, account numbers, and account types (postpaid or prepaid).
If your account was compromised, you will be notified by T-Mobile soon if you haven't already been alerted. You can also contact T-Mobile to get more information by dialing 611 from your phone, messaging using MyT-Mobile.com or the T-Mobile app, or through iMessage with Apple Business Chat. T-Mobile for Business and MetroPCS customers should dial 611 from their phones.
T-Mobile says that it shut down the security breach after it was discovered and alerted it to the authorities. "We take the security of your information very seriously and have a number of safeguards in place to protect your personal information from unauthorized access," T-Mo adds. "We truly regret that this incident occurred and are so sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you."
Even though no financial info was taken, this is still a serious data breach that may have exposed the personal info of an unknown number of customers. If you receive an alert that your account was exposed, or even if you didn't, it's probably a good idea to go change your T-Mobile account password right now.
