The second generation Echo Dot looks fairly similar to the first gen model, with the only visual difference being a slightly shorter body. If a new leak is to be believed, though, the next version of the Echo Dot will have a more updated look.
New images have surfaced that claim to show the third generation Amazon Echo Dot. Shared by Numerama and FrAndroid, the photos show a short, round device with a fabric outer edge. There are volume, mute, and action buttons on the top of the unit and four visible microphone holes, though AFTVnews notes that there may be a fifth mic in the center like on previous Echo Dot models.
The size of this unit is said to be around 3.5 to 4 inches, which would make it slightly larger than the current Echo Dot that's 3.3 inches wide.
Tipsters say that Amazon has improved sound quality on this new Echo Dot, which is said to be codenamed "Donut". With the second gen model, Amazon included a more powerful speech processor to improve far-field speech recognition, so it's possible that that'll be improved with this third gen model as well.
While still unofficial, this leaked Amazon Echo Dot looks like a nice improvement over the current model. The addition of a fabric outer ring like on the second gen Amazon Echo helps make the device look softer and more friendly rather than a harsh plastic device, as does the more rounded edges on the top. Overall this looks like a great improvement to the Echo Dot line, which is Amazon's entry-level Echo device and helps consumers dip their toes into the smart speaker market thanks to its affordable price tag.
