A little more than a year after the Huawei Watch 2 arrived on the scene, a new model has launched. The only thing is that the new Huawei Watch isn't all that different from the old Huawei Watch.
The Huawei Watch 2 (2018) made its debut in China today. This version is largely similar to the Huawei Watch 2 that launched in 2017, down to the design and hardware specs. The one big difference is that the 2018 model has gained an eSIM, eliminating the need to slip a SIM card into the watch.
Other features of the Huawei Watch 2 (2018) include a 1.2-inch 390x390 round AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 2100 processor, 768MB of RAM, and 4GB of storage. It's got a built-in GPS, heart rate sensor, ambient light sensor, accelerometer, and IP68 water and dust resistance, and its 420mAh battery is rated to last around 1.5 days on a single charge.
On the software side, Huawei's new watch runs Wear OS and includes features like sleep tracking and activity tracking. There's also support for mobile payments like Alipay, Huawei Pay, and WeChat payments.
The Huawei Watch 2 (2018) is available from VMALL in China for 1988 yuan ($310 USD). There's no word on when or if it'll make its way to other parts of the globe.
The addition of an eSIM to the Huawei Watch 2 (2018) is nice since it means you don't have to worry about physical SIM cards, but there are likely some folks that'll be disappointed that that's the only new feature of this Huawei Watch. It's unclear when Huawei might introduce an all-new Wear OS device, so if you've been hoping for one, you may want to consider Google's rumored Pixel smartwatch instead.
