Today’s the start of Samsung’s Developer Conference, and the company has kicked off its event with a major Bixby announcement.
Samsung today confirmed that Bixby 2.0 is coming. Bixby 2.0 is a “bold reinvention of the platform,” says Samsung, adding that the updated Bixby will have better natural language capabilities. This should result in more natural commands and complex processing.
Bixby 2.0 will also available on more than just mobile phones. Samsung wants to get Bixby onto TVs, refrigerators, home speakers, and any other connected devices or services that developers can get Bixby on.
The updated Bixby will be open, too, says Samsung. A private beta will be starting soon to allow select developers access to the Bixby SDK. More developers will be added to the Bixby SDK beta later on, and Samsung plans to eventually make it available to all devs.
Bixby 2.0 sounds like a big update for Samsung’s assistant. Perhaps the biggest news is that Samsung wants to get Bixby onto more devices and services. Samsung is currently only available on a few Galaxy smartphones and isn’t yet available for all developers to build support into their apps. It sounds like Bixby 2.0 aims to change that, and if Samsung can accomplish what it says it plans to, then Bixby could become more useful and more of a competitor in the virtual assistant battle.
