Back in September, Apple announced three new phones. Two of which share the lion's share of design aesthetic with two previous generations of iPhone, and another that drops the bezels and opts to adopt a whole new design. The iPhone 8/8 Plus is certainly a worthwhile upgrade in its own right, but the shadow of the iPhone X is impossible to ignore.
And it's not like this is some kind of surprise for Apple, either. They knew that most people who were preparing to upgrade their iPhone would want to switch to the flagship model. And anyone who is planning on switching to the iPhone is probably doing it for the iPhone X, and not so much for the iPhone 8.
You can see this sort of sentiment echoed in almost every single review of the iPhone 8 up to this point. I don't think I've watched or read one review where the iPhone X's impending arrival has been mentioned. Sometimes multiple times! And there isn't anything wrong with that, because it's true. The iPhone 8 exists, fills a certain price point (under $1,000), and also adds plenty to the mix to make it worthwhile.
But, the iPhone X still does all that with a brand new, eye-catching design. Plus, that display.
Last month, in light of those three new iPhones, I asked all of you if you were planning on skipping the iPhone 8 in favor of the iPhone X, if you were planning on buying a new iPhone at all. But now that the iPhone 8 is out there in the wild, and I keep seeing folks say, "Skip this awesome phone" or something similar --because you should wait for the iPhone X-- I kind of want to know if there are any of you out there who actually decided to go the other way and pick up the "other iPhone" this time around.
I'm also asking because I don't think I've made up my mind, honestly. As it stands right now, the reasons I want the iPhone X are all the obvious ones: That 5.8-inch display and the camera. The design, too, even if I'm back on the fence all over again if I like that "notch design" or not. But I can also get the same camera, the same internal hardware, and not having to resort to just Face ID to unlock my phone. I like Touch ID. I like using it for Apple Pay purchases. Using my face to unlock my phone so I can buy something while people wait behind me in a line seems like unnecessary pressure.
But in addition to that, I'm not a fan of the implementation of Control Center on the iPhone X, either. I loved Control Center not because it had all of the quick access features there, including that dedicated page for music, but because of how it was utilized. Sliding up from the bottom of the display made it so easy. That single feature was basically good enough to keep me on iOS. And now it's on the top, in the right corner of the display, making it just slightly less easy to access.
I don't know that I have a reason to get the iPhone X. I want to keep Touch ID. I want to keep Control Center the way it is, as far as using it is concerned. But I also want all of the hardware (with the exception of Face ID and the display) that the iPhone X has. So I think I might pick up the iPhone 8 Plus. And let's not pretend like Apple is going to have enough iPhone X units at launch anyway. Or even anytime soon after launch for that matter.
What about you, though? Where do you stand on this particular subject? Did you already pick up your iPhone 8 or 8 Plus? If so, how are you liking it so far? Or will you be holding out for that iPhone X? Let me know!
