One day after Amazon unveiled a new Echo device with a display, a report claims that Google is cooking up its own smart device with a screen.
Google is reportedly working on a competitor to the Amazon Echo Show that’s codenamed “Manhattan”. Sources speaking to TechCrunch say that the device is said to have a screen similar to the 7-inch display found on the Echo Show (pictured above), and its feature set is expected to include YouTube, Google Assistant, Google Photos, video calling, and support for controlling smart home devices.
This new Google device reportedly runs Android so that third-party developers can more easily build apps for it.
Finally, Google originally planned to introduce the device in mid-2017, but because of the Echo Show, the company wants to get it out sooner, possibly in 2017. There’s no word on how much the device will cost, but as an example, the Amazon Echo Show is priced at $229.99.
Google currently has a regular Google Home, and rumors have suggested that it could be prepping a Google Home Mini and Google Home Max. Now we’ve got rumors of another smart device, this one with a screen. The big draw here would presumably be video calling support and YouTube, letting you make video calls using Google services and watch things like cooking videos. Google probably wouldn’t mind having more folks using Google Assistant, too.
What do you think of this rumor? Would you be interested in a smart Google device with a 7-inch screen?
