Amazon’s army of Alexa devices is growing again.
Amazon has launched its new Amazon Dash Wand, which includes the retailer’s Alexa assistant. With the Wi-Fi-enabled Dash Wand, you can scan barcodes or speak items to have them added to your Amazon shopping cart, where you can then review and check out. You can also straight-up buy items on the Dash Wand by saying something like “Buy double A batteries.”
Because the Dash Wand is equipped with Alexa, you can also use the device for most normal Alexa functions. This includes asking questions like what the weather is like, controlling smart home devices, and interacting with services like Pizza Hut and Allrecipes. The Amazon Dash Wand does not play music, though.
The Amazon Dash Wand is around 5 inches tall and is magnetic so that you can stick it onto your fridge. It’s also water resistant, so you don’t have to worry about splashing it while your whipping up dinner.
Amazon is asking $20 for the new Dash Wand, but Amazon Prime customers will receive a $20 Amazon credit when they register the device, essentially making it free. Amazon is also throwing in a free 90-day trial of Amazon Fresh grocery delivery for Prime customers that buy a Dash Wand.
This new Dash Wand looks like a cheap and easy way to get an Alexa device into your home. The fact that it doesn’t play music may limit its appeal for some customers, but if you’re an Amazon Prime customer and you just want a device with an assistant that can answer questions, perform tasks, and help you get groceries, then the Dash Wand could be a good device for you.
